“A midnight visitor” from Garth Nix’s “SABRIEL”, by Kali Ciesemier
Dreamed of a quiet evening at home. There was snow on the ground and my cat lay at my feet gently snoozing. There was a tremendous pounding from the front door, and as I had not been been expecting anyone, I was obviously quite startled. When I opened the door and saw that no one was there and the streets were quite empty I became very nervous.
I bolted the door and from the corner of my eye I saw a fleeing shadow. I knew then that in an instant…maybe when my back was turned, or maybe if I had taken a second to yawn, or blink…the intruder had slipped past my notice.
The phone rang. The lights went out.
